The Great Pyramid of Giza was once advocated (1884) as the location for the Prime Meridian, a reference point used for determining a base longitude.

From Mount Sinai in the north to the pyramids of Giza, the landscape and architecture of Egypt tells a story. A history of the regions diverse cultures and a key to understanding the foundations on which they were built.

The name Sinai may stem from the moon god Sin who was worshiped in the area in ancient times. It may also come from the Hebrew word seneh, the name for a native bush.

Jabal Mosá (Arabic for “Mountain of Moses”), a peak in southern Sinai, is traditionally identified as the Mount Sinai of the Old Testament, where Moses was said to have received the Ten Commandments from God.

Giza is a town in Egypt on the west bank of the Nile river, some 20 km southwest of central Cairo and now part of the greater Cairo metropolis. Giza is most famous as the location of the Giza Plateau: the site of some of the most impressive ancient monuments in the world, including a complex of ancient Egyptian royal mortuary and sacred structures, including the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a number of other large pyramids and temples.
